These incredibly rare color change Pyrope were discovered in Morogoro, Tanzania in 1987 and haven't been found again since. They have a fun story of trading hands and being tucked away in a safety deposit box over the decades to ultimately come home to Joe Henley Rough & Gemstones.
These were originally believed to be a classic rhodolite, containing fine needle-like inclusions that are most likely rutile. Due to this assumption they were long overlooked! Upon further analysis they revealed themselves to be of the Pyrope family. Their color change is due to presence of Manganese. Deep plum purple under LED changes to a bright fuchsia pink under incandescent light. We believe these are an absolute treasure that we are fortunate to have acquired.
*As is the norm with these, most have some degree of silk. We are showing a photo of the faceted gems to demonstrate that the silk does not distract in the slightest from faceting gorgeous gemstones!*
