Sometimes in Africa I see the same stone being offered by different people on different days. These are jokingly referred to as “prostitute stones” because , well, let’s just say they get around…
In some ways it’s the same with Malaya Garnets….they’re a mix or hybrid of different garnet groups. In fact, Malaya is a Swahili word meaning ‘outcast’ or ‘prostitute’.
GIA classifies Malaya Garnet as a pyrope-spessartite species. And because pyrope is often their primary component , they’re often classified as a variety of pyrope. However, they can also have traces of grossular and andradite
